Intent

 

At our school, Cultural Studies provides learners with opportunities to explore and appreciate the diversity of the world in which they live. Through the study of different countries, cultures, traditions, beliefs, and ways of life, learners develop an understanding of their own identity while gaining respect for and appreciation of others. 

The curriculum is designed to be inclusive, accessible, and meaningful across all pathways, enabling learners to experience different cultures through practical, sensory, creative, and experiential learning opportunities. Cultural Studies promotes curiosity, tolerance, respect, and global awareness, supporting learners to become active and informed members of their communities. 

Through immersive experiences, learners are encouraged to celebrate diversity, challenge stereotypes, develop communication skills, and build an understanding of the similarities and differences between people and cultures. Cultural Studies also contributes to learners' spiritual, moral, social, and cultural (SMSC) development and prepares them for life in a diverse and interconnected society. 

 Implementation

Cultural Studies is delivered through a dedicated focus week during the Summer 2 term across all pathways. Each year, learners explore a chosen country through a range of cross-curricular activities that provide opportunities to experience different aspects of culture in engaging and meaningful ways.

Multi-Sensory Pathway 

Learners explore the focus country through sensory, practical, and experiential activities designed to stimulate curiosity and engagement. Activities may include exploring cultural music, food, celebrations, art, clothing, language, and traditions through sensory experiences and hands-on learning. Teachers adapt activities to meet individual learning needs and communication styles.  

Engagement Pathway 

Learners participate in a range of practical and interactive activities linked to the chosen country. Learning opportunities may include storytelling, creative arts, food tasting, music, cultural celebrations, and exploration of traditions and customs. Activities are designed to encourage participation, communication, and understanding through meaningful experiences. 

Progression Pathway 

Learners engage in curriculum-linked activities that develop their understanding of the chosen country and its culture. Through research, discussion, enquiry, creative activities, and practical experiences, learners explore geographical, historical, social, religious, and cultural aspects of the country. Learning promotes critical thinking, cultural awareness, and global citizenship.  

Functional Pathway 

Learners explore the chosen country through activities that support preparation for adulthood and the development of transferable skills. Learning opportunities may include research projects, food preparation, language exploration, cultural comparisons, creative tasks, and investigations into traditions and lifestyles. Activities promote communication, independence, problem-solving, and an understanding of the wider world. 

Across all pathways, Cultural Studies draws upon a range of curriculum areas, creating rich and meaningful learning experiences that promote cultural understanding and appreciation of diversity. 

Impact

 

The impact of the Cultural Studies curriculum is that learners develop a greater awareness and appreciation of the diverse cultures, traditions, beliefs, and lifestyles that exist within the world around them. Through participation in immersive and engaging experiences, learners broaden their understanding of different communities and develop positive attitudes towards diversity and inclusion. 

Learners demonstrate increased curiosity about the wider world, improved communication and interaction skills, and greater confidence in discussing cultural similarities and differences. They develop respect, empathy, and tolerance, supporting their personal development and readiness for life in modern Britain. 

For learners in the Functional and Progression pathways, Cultural Studies contributes to the development of research skills, critical thinking, independence, and global awareness. Learners become better equipped to engage positively with people from different backgrounds and to participate successfully in their communities and future workplaces. 

Evidence of impact is gathered through E4L observations, learner participation, discussions, creative outcomes, practical activities, and learner voice. Ultimately, Cultural Studies helps learners to become more informed, respectful, and culturally aware individuals who value diversity and understand their place within a wider global community.
